Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition)(9.15) —I thank the Manager of Government Business in the Senate (Senator Robert Ray) for moving the motion in that amended form. I acknowledge that the Opposition agreed that we should, in the normal way, forgo consideration of general business from this week, although we said that that was subject to the completion of two private members' Bills which came up in general business yesterday. The first was Senator Watson's Bill, which yesterday completed its passage through the Senate. The other Bill was Senator Walters's private member's Bill relating to videos. We had hoped to see that completed yesterday. I wish to make it public that the arrangement with the Government is that we will seek to deal with only so much general business next week as is required to complete the passage of that Bill. I undertake to discuss with the Opposition senators who are concerned with that Bill the steps that should be taken to ensure speedy passage in dealing with the remaining amendments, and to discuss that with the Government, the Australian Democrats and Senator Harradine who, of course, has a vital interest. The Opposition believes that it would be desirable to see the consideration of that Bill completed during the current session. It has been around for a long time.
