Senator TATE (Minister for Justice)(10.29) —As I understand it, officers of the Attorney-General's Department did invite the National Companies and Securities Commission (NCSC) to send up a representative from Melbourne. That organisation indicated that it had some other priorities and felt that perhaps the officers of the Department could deal with the matter. I regret very much that it proved on the occasion of the Estimates Committee meeting that that was not the case. I am distressed that the Committee found it necessary, through Senator Durack, to put so many questions on notice. I believe that they have been answered adequately. I approached Senator Durack in the corridor a couple of days ago to ask whether he wanted somebody from the National Companies and Securities Commission to be here for the Committee of the Whole debate. He indicated that he did not require that. I apologise to the Committee for that, and I will make sure it does not happen again.
