Senator McMULLAN —My question is directed to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. It refers to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Namibian repatriation project. Has the UNHCR called for voluntary contributions of $38.5m to meet the cost of the project? Has Australia contributed? If not, are we planning to contribute and, if so, how much?

Senator GARETH EVANS —The UNHCR launched an international appeal for $38.5m back in January to repatriate and support an estimated 58,000 Namibian refugees, mainly from Angola but also from Zambia and other countries. The Australian Government has provided $500,000 towards this appeal. The Government has a continuing interest in a peaceful resolution to the situation in Namibia and will keep under review the question of providing further support.
