Senator Short asked the Minister for Consumer Affairs, upon notice, on 8 March 1989:

(1) Is the Australian Federation of Consumer Organisations (AFCO) which has received $217,000 grant-in-aid from the Commonwealth Government, a member of the International Organisation of Consumer Unions (IOCU); if so, when did AFCO become a member?

(2) Are any full-member organisations of AFCO also members of the IOCU; if so, what are the names of the organisations and when did they join IOCU?


Senator Bolkus —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) Yes. IOCU's 1989 International Consumer Directory states that the Australian Federation of Consumer Organisations (AFCO) is a member of the International Organisation of Consumer Unions (IOCU). AFCO joined IOCU as an Associate in 1975.

(2) The following full-member organisations of AFCO are also members of IOCU according to IOCU's 1989 International Consumer Directory:
