Senator POWELL(11.08) —The Australian Democrats strongly support this amendment. I reiterate our approach to the Government's argument: It has, for as long as the Democrats have been in this place, been our policy that growers should control their own operations as far as possible. The Government is saying that, because we are now moving into a commercial situation, we should not be having wheat growers in a controlling situation. That is a contradiction of its argument for the whole legislation in the first place, which is that growers can go out and do their own marketing, that they do not need the Board to do it for them. If that is the case, every grower is an expert. We accept that we do want good expertise on the Board. We believe that we can best get it, in the interests of the wheat industry, from wheat growers themselves. This is a consistent policy position for the Australian Democrats.
