Senator REID —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) congratulates the Staff of the National Museum of Australia and the Friends of the Museum for the success of the Museum Open Day, held on Saturday, 6 May 1989;

(b) recognises the importance of the National Museum project to this, and future generations of Australians, and endorses the efforts of Friends of the Museum to obtain support for the construction of the Museum;

(c) reminds the Prime Minister (Mr Hawke) of his 1983 election promise to proceed with the construction of the Museum, and expresses its concern at the Government's failure to implement this policy; and

(d) calls upon the Government to meet its election commitment to proceed with the Museum and, in particular, requests the Government to examine the possibility of obtaining sponsorship from the private sector to fund particular exhibits, and enable the Museum to continue its program of acquisitions.
