Senator MACKLIN —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes the findings of the 1989 UNICEF State of the World's Children report that mankind has the capacity and technology to end the needless deaths of the 14 million children who will die in 1989 from preventable diseases such as measles and diarrhoea;

(b) calls on the Government to increase its base contribution to UNICEF from its present low of $3.3 million (or 21 cents per Australian) to $7 million (or 44 cents per Australian) in the 1989 Budget;

(c) notes, by comparison, that the Australian Government spends $159 per head of population on new military equipment, or $453 per head on defence; and

(d) urges the Government to reassess its spending priorities which permit it to spend huge sums on weapons and technology that kills while being so miserly with expenditure on programs which save the lives of the world's poorest children.
