Senator REID —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) expresses its concern at the Government's decision to withdraw funding for the education programs conducted by the National Botanic Gardens;

(b) in the absence of any evidence that the Government adequately promoted the Education Unit of the Gardens in appropriate interstate forums, does not accept the validity of the Government's claim that funding has been withdrawn because the Unit primarily served Australian Capital Territory students and visitors; and

(c) reminds the Government of its frequently professed commitment to the conservation, protection and management of Australia's wilderness areas, including our unique flora, and urges the Government to recognise the important role of educational programs such as those carried out by the Education Unit at the National Botanic Gardens in this process.
