Senator COLLARD (Leader of the National Party of Australia) —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate, noting that-

(a) the Hawke Government has consistently demonstrated its lack of concern for the rural sector since its election to power in 1983;

(b) through the Government's unwillingness to formulate policies to assist rural producers, the average family farm income estimate for the 1985-86 financial year is below the poverty line and also well below the unemployment payment available to a couple with two children; and

(c) the Hawke Government imposts such as the tax package including the capital gains tax and the quarantining of farm losses have precipitated this decline in the standard of living for rural producers, although our farmers are considered some of the most efficient in the world.

calls on the Federal Government to grant relief to Australia's rural producers by:

(i) revising Government policies which are causing record high interest rates,

(ii) providing an immediate injection of an additional $100m for rural adjustment funding; and

(iii removing Government controls that artificially inflate farm input costs, for example, fuel.
