(Question No. 688)

Senator Bolkus asked the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on Tuesday, 26 November 1985:

What requests for assistance were received from the United States Government, when they were referred to the Australian Federal Police, and what responses were made to the United States Embassy and when (see answer to Question on Notice No. 306, Hansard, 5 November 1985, p. 1611).

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Foreign Affairs has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The Department of Foreign Affairs contact with the United States Embassy related only to its inquiry as to the whereabouts of a Mr Kazys Simkus. The Embassy was asked to send other enquiries direct to the Australian Federal Police.

In a letter of 25 July 1985 the Australian Federal Police informed the Department that Mr Simkus died in 1968. That information was sent to the Embassy by the Department in a letter dated 1 August 1985.
