(Question No. 687)

Senator Puplick asked the Minister representing the Minister for Science, upon notice, on Tuesday, 26 November 1985:

What decision, if any, has been made on Recommendation 37 (e) of the Report of the Inquiry into Commonwealth Laboratories regarding an ASTEC-chaired inquiry into certain aspects of acoustic research in Australia, and if no decision has yet been made, when may one be expected.

Senator Button —The Minister for Science has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The Government has accepted a set of general recommendations which are in broad agreement with those contained in the Report of the Inquiry into Commonwealth Laboratories. Specific recommendations such as 37 (e) will generally be implemented when they are consistent with these, but provision has been made for Ministers responsible to indicate cases where further evaluation is necessary before a decision can be made. The position in regard to Recommendation 37 (e) will not be clear until Departmental responses have been received and evaluated. This is expected to occur in February 1986.
