Senator Foreman asked the Minister representing the Minister for Trade, upon notice, on 7 November 1985:

(1) What numbers of new motor vehicles were exported from Australia in the year 1984-85 and do these figures represent an increase or a decrease over those for 1983-84 and 1982-83.

(2) What value of motor vehicle components were exported from Australia in 1984-85 and do these figures represent an increase or decrease over those for 1983-84 and 1982-83.


Senator Button —The Minister for Trade has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Exports of Australian produced assembled new motor vehicles in 1984-85 were 1,982 compared with 2,953 in 1983-84 and 2,713 in 1982-83. The 1984-85 figure was 32.9 per cent lower than 1983-84 and 26.9 per cent lower than 1982-83. Exports of unassembled motor vehicles are not recorded by number in official trade statistics. However, the value of exports of Australian produced assembled and unassembled new motor vehicles in 1984-85 was $133.2 million, compared with $131.8 million in 1983-84 and $102.1 million in 1982-83. The 1984-85 figure was 1.1 per cent higher than 1983-84 and 30.4 per cent higher than 1982-83.

(2) The value of exports of Australian produced motor vehicle components (including chassis, bodies, batteries, engines, tyres etc.) in 1984-85 was $259.9 million, compared with $231.3 million in 1983-84 and $170.9 million in 1982-83. The 1984-85 figure was 12.4 per cent higher than 1983-84 and 52.1 per cent higher than 1982-83.
