(Question No. 676)

Senator Michael Baume asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 14 November 1985:

Will the Special Minister of State investigate the allegations referred to in the Illawarra Mercury of 9 November 1985 that, because the ALP's Cunningham Federal Electorate Conference was `broke' and could not afford the stamps, the Minister for Housing, Mr Stewart West financed and distributed by mail from his parliamentary office in Wollongong a letter to 800 members of the Australian Labor Party in the Wollongong area outlining the reasons for the recent three months suspension of Mr Rex Connor Junior from the Labor Party, to establish whether stamps and stationery provided to Mr West for parliamentary purposes, were in fact diverted for use by the Minister to further the left faction's case in an internal Labor Party dispute against the right faction involving branch stacking and rule breaches.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Special Minister of State has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

No. Mr West has informed me that the allegations are not correct.
