(Question No. 670)

Senator Bolkus asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 11 November 1985:

(1) Did any Ministers of the Australian Government, who visited Singapore between 28 February 1968 and 8 March 1971, complain formally to the Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign affairs, or senior officers of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra, that staff of the Australian High Commission in Singapore rendered unsatisfactory or inadequate service during visits to that city; if so, what was the nature of the complaints, and to what specific incidents did they relate.

(2) What action was taken in response to any such complaints.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Foreign Affairs has supplied the following answer to the honourable member's question:

The Department of Foreign Affairs has no record of any formal complaints by Ministers of the Australian Government who visited Singapore between 28 February 1968 and 8 March 1971 of unsatisfactory or inadequate service by the staff of the High Commission.
