(Question No. 637)

Senator Chipp asked the Minister representing the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 16 October 1985:

Are reports of a proposed amalgamation by the Government of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), leading to the end of the SBS as a separate ethnic broadcasting service, accurate; if not, will the Government state what the options are for the future of ethnic broadcasting services for Australia.

Senator Walsh —The Minister for Communications has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question.

(1) The Government has decided to reject a merger of SBS and the ABC and will move to establish the Special Broadcasting Service as an independent statutory authority.

(2) Now that this threshold decision has been resolved the Government will shortly consider the many detailed recommendations of the Connor Report.
