Senator GARETH EVANS —I was asked yesterday by Senator Michael Baume whether the Minister for Defence would table the Defence Facilities Policy Committee report on user requirements for the Army training facilities proposal recently released under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. The Minister has unhesitatingly agreed to this report being tabled and I do so now. I understand that it has already been made available to the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, which is inquiring into this proposal. I emphasise that the views expressed in the paper were not accepted by the final committee to which it was presented, the Defence Force Development Committee. The arguments presented in the paper show that the Department of Defence was not treating the proposals lightly or superficially but was subjecting them to searching analysis. The types of issues covered in this report will be addressed in the environmental impact statements on this proposal. I hope that the release of the report will now give honourable senators some background to the proposal and assist them in their considerations of the environmental impact statements when they become available.
