Senator MICHAEL BAUME —Mr Deputy President, I claim to have been misrepresented and seek leave to make a personal explanation.

Leave granted.

Senator MICHAEL BAUME —Mr Deputy President, yesterday in the Senate, after you had called to order the Minister for Community Services, Senator Grimes, for making a remark that you described as quite improper, Senator Grimes responded:

I am indignant for the large number of people who are poverty stricken and on pensions in this country as a result of his activities.

He was referring to me. That is totally false. Senator Grimes knows it to be false. I challenge him--

The DEPUTY PRESIDENT —Order! Senator Baume, in making a personal explanation you may explain the facts. You should not use the opportunity to criticise another honourable senator.

Senator MICHAEL BAUME —I know of no people who are poverty stricken and on pensions in this country as a result of my activities. I ask the Minister: If he knows of any, would he draw them to my attention? In the absence of that, would he apologise? Further, after this had occurred, I asked that that remark be withdrawn. In the subsequent toing and froing it was not withdrawn and I ask for it to be withdrawn now.

The DEPUTY PRESIDENT —Order! That is not in order. An objection has to be taken at the time. It is up to Senator Grimes. If he wishes to withdraw it he may; I cannot order him to do so.
