Senator GRIMES —On 2 December Senator Townley asked Senator Gietzelt a question without notice concerning the nationality of the person who selects pilots chosen to fly for Qantas and whether some Qantas pilots are in fact foreign pilots. The answer I have been given is as follows: Qantas pilot selection is, in fact, not made by one person. There are nine separate selection steps involved in the procedure and no single member of Qantas's staff is involved in all of the steps. The present Qantas pilot selection policy requires an applicant, inter alia, to hold Australian permanent residence status and Australian pilot licences.
