Senator MORRIS —Is the Minister representing the Minister for Communications aware of the concern of the people of Parkes at the downgrading of its Telecom office? In view of the social and economic effects of Telecom facilities in rural New South Wales, can the Minister advise of the future of that office?

Senator WALSH —After a furious scratch around, I have discovered that I have a note on this. I am advised by Mr Duffy that Telecom Australia does not intend altering the current status of the Parkes Telecom office, which is an outpost of the Dubbo district. Existing staff who directly provide service to the customer will continue to be based in Parkes. However, a small number of clerical positions involved with basic internal administration matters, concerning accounting and personnel functions, will be progressively transferred to Dubbo. These transfers will be made either as a result of a direct request by the staff concerned or as the positions become vacant. So, Emily Renshaw and all the other people of the Parkes telephone exchange have no need to worry.
