Senator ARCHER —Has the attention of the Minister representing the Special Minister of State and the Attorney-General been drawn to a petition containing 16,000 signatures presented this week to the Prime Minister by Ruth Mackay, daughter of the murdered anti-drug campaigner Donald Mackay, and Dr Richard Smith, Chairman of the Griffith Concerned Citizens Committee? Will the Government proceed to accede to the request contained in the petition that the Griffith drug ring and its national links be given as a reference to the National Crime Authority for attention?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I have no briefing on this matter. I was not aware of that petition. I will certainly chase it up and find out what is going on. I had understood that those matters were still within the domain of Mr Justice Stewart.

Senator Chaney —It is funny how you know so much about a silly article by a man named Twigg but cannot answer a perfectly serious question. Now we know what you read. That is typical.

Senator GARETH EVANS —I will let that thoroughly, comprehensively wimpish contribution stand on its own terms in Hansard.

Senator Chaney —What else do you read at night?

Senator GARETH EVANS —This is real class! I ask Senator Chaney whether we could have more of these comments in Hansard. I do not know anything about the circumstances of the request that has been made, but I will chase the matter up with the Special Minister of State as soon as possible.
