Senator REID(9.17) —I want to raise the question of the nurses course which is being introduced at the Canberra College of Advanced Education to commence, I am glad to say, in 1986. It is a course that seems to have been thought through and planned most carefully. I think it answers the concerns that many people have as to whether under this system nurses will still be caring for people or whether they will merely be academics. The course, over three years, will comprise some 1,500 hours of educational training, most likely at the college for most of that time, but in addition there will be some 1,200 hours when the students will be in hospitals or in the place of community nurses, out and about learning the sorts of skills that most people would expect that nurses should have. It is certainly my hope that it works out well. I wonder whether the course which has been prepared has been accredited as a degree course. Can the Minister for Education (Senator Ryan) tell us whether that has been announced and conveyed to the college?
