Senator CRICHTON-BROWNE(4.49) —I seek leave to move:

That the Senate take note of the paper.

Senator Missen —I intend to speak on this matter in the adjournment debate tonight and this may stop me from doing so.

The ACTING DEPUTY PRESIDENT (Senator Elstob) —It will not stop you from speaking.

Senator Missen —According to my reading of the Standing Orders, it may. Therefore, I would like to move that leave be not granted. The Opposition does not want to move to take note of this paper at present.

Senator CRICHTON-BROWNE —I ask your advice as to whether the motion I have sought to move inhibits Senator Missen from speaking on this subject in the adjournment debate tonight?

The ACTING DEPUTY PRESIDENT —I understand that it will not inhibit the debate unless the matter raised is specific.

Senator Missen —It will be specific. I will challenge the ministerial statement. I think the motion will have the effect of inhibiting my remarks.

The ACTING DEPUTY PRESIDENT —If the honourable senator wishes to be specific, the motion will inhibit the debate.

Senator Georges —Refuse leave.

Senator Missen —I refuse leave.

The ACTING DEPUTY PRESIDENT —Leave is not granted.
