Senator MACKLIN(11.10) —I wish to raise with the Minister for Veterans' Affairs an aspect of clause 11(1) which deals essentially with the problem of sex discrimination. The clause itself says:

(b) in respect of a female veteran (including a veteran who has died), a child of the veteran is a dependant of the veteran.

Considering the Government's philosophical position on sex discrimination and the general matters enunciated by the Minister for Education (Senate Ryan) on behalf of the Government on the status of women and legislative proceedings that flow from that statement, I wonder why this Bill-not only in this clause but in other clauses as well-has still carried through the distinction which is so contrary to announced Government policy. We find that in many places female veterans are actually worse off in some significant instances than widows of male veterans.
