(Question No. 614)

Senator Bolkus asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 10 October 1985:

Is a private organisation called the Defence Manufacturers Association of Australia planning to hold an exhibition of arms and military equipment at the Sydney Showground and that it is planned for October 1986 which is International Year of Peace; if so, what action is being taken to communicate the Government's disapproval; firstly at this arms bazaar and secondly at its particularly bad timing.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The Sydney based company, Desiko Pty Ltd, has cancelled arrangements to stage the Pacific Area Defence Exhibition (PADEX) in Sydney in May 1986. The exhibition was to have been supported by the Defence Manufacturers Association of Australia.
