Senator GRIMES (Minister for Community Services)(12.26) —I am informed by my advisers that if the present exchange rate stayed much the same for the year at 67c-odd as it is now, the difference would be between $100m and $150m and not the $400m which was previously quoted. I will check that with the Minister for Defence (Mr Beazley). This year the Department of Defence will seek supplementation as a result of exchange rate fluctuations. It seeks supplementation every year. I have no indication and the Government certainly has not considered making any of the alterations that the honourable senator has talked about to capital expenditure. I have no reason to believe that that supplementation will not be available. Of course, I am not in a position to stand up here, swear on the Bible and say that it will not happen.
