(Question No. 603)

Senator Bolkus asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 9 October 1985:

Is there a sponsorship arrangement between the Army Reserve and the Victorian Football League (VFL) or any other organisation in respect to the VFL second eighteen competition; if so, what are the terms of such an arrangement.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

Army has a sponsorship arrangement with Channel Seven Herald-Sun TV Pty Ltd and the VFL in respect to the second eighteen competition as an advertising medium to publicise the Army Reserve within Victoria.

The terms of the sponsorship provide Army with the right to name the competition `the Army Reserve Cup' which appears on football grounds' billboards and attracts considerable TV coverage. Also included are two Army Reserve commercial announcements during each televised match. The period covered by the sponsorship includes the 1985 and 1986 seasons together with an option for the 1987 season, the cost for these years being $152,940, $172,050 and $191,500 respectively.
