(Question No. 578)


Senator Withers asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 9 October 1985-

(1) What sum is allocated in the current financial year for hospitality/entertainment which may be expended: (a) by the Department; and (b) by each and every Statutory Authority for which the Minister has responsibility.

(2) What were the guidelines in force as at 1 September 1985 for expenditure from the hospitality/entertainment account of:

(a) the Department; and

(b) each and every Statutory Authority for which the Minister has responsibility.

(3) Following upon the Statement by the Treasurer `Reform of the Australian Taxation System' on 19 September 1985 what action is proposed in relation to (1) and (2) above.


Senator Gareth Evans —The Special Minister of State has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(a) An amount of $9,000 has been allocated in the current financial year for hospitality/entertainment expenditure by the Department.

(b) The following amounts have been allocated for hospitality/entertainment expenditure by Statutory Authorities for which the Minister has responsibility:

(2) The guidelines in force as at 1 September 1985 for expenditure on hospitality/entertainment are those contained in Section 13 of the Finance Directions pursuant to the Audit Act 1901.

(3) The Department of the Special Minister of State and agencies within the portfolio when meeting accounts for entertainment expenses incurred on and from 20 September 1985 carefully record and monitor those expenses so that, when the rules governing the liability for such tax are settled, the necessary transfer of funds to Consolidated Revenue can occur.
