Senator WALSH (Minister for Finance and Acting Minister for Resources and Energy)(9.49) —This is very much more a policy question than an Estimates committee question. I do not know whether this matter was taken up at an Estimates committee meeting itself. There is, of course, and there has been for many years, a water resources assessment program and a water research program, the expenditure on which amounts to just over $1m in the present Budget. Senator Vigor mentioned the Clarence River, which I presume is in northern New South Wales. I think he called it a hydro-electric scheme. From what I recall of that proposition, it involves pumping water uphill, thereby consuming electricity, instead of generating electricity by putting it though a turbine as it goes downhill. As far as I know, that proposal is not under any study at the moment. If that is wrong-I would be be surprised if it were wrong-I will ask the Minister for Resources and Energy to let the honourable senator know.

Proposed expenditure agreed to.

Department of the Special Minister of State

Proposed expenditure, $243,624,000
