Senator WALSH (Minister for Finance and Acting Minister for Resources and Energy)(9.32) —I do not know whether Senator Gareth Evans would have any comment on that question. There is one point that could be made: Although the ratio is not 1:1, there is, of course, some correlation between the rate of economic growth and energy consumption. Given that in the last 2 1/2 years Australia has had, by historic Australian standards and particularly by the standards of the last decade or so, a very high rate of economic growth, it must be expected that that high rate of economic growth must have some influence on the growth in petroleum energy consumption. Otherwise, I am not entirely familiar with this area any more; I shall see whether Senator Gareth Evans has any comment to make on the question.
