Senator ARCHER —I ask a question of the Leader of the Government in the Senate. What inquiries have been instituted by either the Leader of the Government or the Special Minister of State concerning what was reported as a $50m drug haul bungle on the Sydney docks last week? Is there any allegation of either someone in authority deliberately causing the job to fail or conflict between Australian Federal Police officers and Customs officers as to the administration of the duties concerned?

Senator BUTTON —I am not aware of any investigations having been asked for as a result of the Press reports which occurred last week, as Senator Archer pointed out. There are always allegations about drug hauls, or the absence of drug hauls, particularly on the Sydney waterfront. Those allegations frequently stem from the same source and over a long time when they have been investigated they have largely been found to be unsubstantiated. Nonetheless, because the amount on this occasion is high, I will have some inquiries made and see whether I can provide Senator Archer with a more detailed answer.
