(Question No. 626)

Senator Boswell asked the Minister representing the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment, upon notice, on 15 October 1985:

Can the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment confirm that the Australia Council is regarded by the Federal Government as merely another Government body under direct ministerial control instead of being an independent body designed to promote Australian art as was originally intended.

Senator Ryan —The Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The Australia Council was established under the Australia Council Act 1975 and is the Government's arts funding agency. The powers and functions of the Council together with the relationship between the Council and the Government are set out in the present legislative arrangements.
