(Question No. 529)

Senator Brownhill asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 12 September 1985:

Have members of the Central Tablelands No Base Committee been attempting for some time to see the Minister for Defence to discuss the latest developments in the acquisition of land in the Orange-Bathurst area; if so, have meetings been held, if not, when will the Minister be available to discuss the matter with these people.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

Approaches have been made on a number of occasions by the Central Tablelands No Base Committee with a view to discussing the proposal for a Schools Complex to be located in the Orange-Bathurst area. The group has been advised that there seems little value in a meeting until the results of the environmental studies are available. At that stage all parties concerned will be in a position to discuss the matter in a properly informed way.

The No Base Central Tablelands Committee has every opportunity to make its views known to the consultants undertaking those studies, and to the Senate Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee which is now to inquire into the proposal.
