(Question No. 499)

Senator Haines asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 10 September 1985:

(1) How much money has been spent on restoration and renovation of the Air Force Field Office at 155 Barton Terrace, North Adelaide.

(2) Was this work done in accordance with National Trust criteria.

(3) Is the Department of Defence considering, or in the process of, selling the Barton Terrace property; if so, what price does it anticipate the property will bring.

(4) Is the Department intending to rent other premises for the Air Office in South Australia; if so, where, and what annual rental.

(5) Why is the Department:

(a) selling the Barton Terrace property;

(b) renting rather than purchasing new premises.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Approximately $172,000 has been spent on repairs and maintenance to the Air Force property at 155 Barton Terrace, North Adelaide, since it was acquired by the RAAF in 1950. A further $25,000 is planned to be spent in 1985-86.

(2) Since the property was entered on the Register of the National Estate, all repair work has been agreed by the National Trust.

(3) The Department of Defence is considering alternative accommodation arrangements. If this occurs, the Department of Local Government and Administrative Services would arrange for valuation of the Barton Terrace property and its disposal.

(4) No decision has yet been taken to rent other premises.

(5) (a) If a decision to release the Barton Terrace property is made, it will be because the RAAF's accommodation needs can be met more economically in other premises; (b) No decision has yet been made to rent or purchase new premises.
