Senator WALSH (Minister for Finance)(12.39) —I do not know where Senator Vigor heard that. I think common sense should tell us that it is not true. I am advised that the Australian Taxation Office does not believe it loses any files at all. It acknowledges mislaying files from time to time. The Taxation Office also believes, being suspicious, I suppose, that some taxpayers claim to have lodged returns when in fact they have not. I guess in that sort of circumstance there is no way of actually determining with certainty whether the Taxation Office has lost a file or whether taxpayers, in what they perceive to be their own interests, claim they have done something which in fact they have not done.
