Senator GRIMES (Minister for Community Services)(11.41) —I will certainly get those answers. I know that Senator Baume knows that I do not have the details now. I return to a previous question asked by Senator Baume about the exclusion of the Australian Institute of Health from receiving funds for acquired immune deficiency syndrome research. I will read the answer that was provided as a result of the question asked of Senator Ryan. There are separate appropriations for the Australian Institute of Health, division 326, and as such it is considered more appropriate to meet the needs of the AIH through these appropriations rather than the appropriation for AIDS, in the same manner that staff costs associated with the AIDS program are met from the Department's salaries vote. I assume that that means that the Department does not want AIH to double dip. If I were the shadow Minister for Community Services I would consider that answer to be pathetic. As the Minister for Community Services, equally I consider that answer to be pathetic. The Minister for Health (Dr Blewett), as a result of my comments, has undertaken to scrutinise carefully applications for AIDS funding. As everyone knows, he is concerned to get the best value for each dollar allocated to AIDS research. He will look at the application by the Australian Institute of Health for extra funds for AIDS research. As a result of the question-I suspect it is as much as a result of the answer-that situation might change.
