Senator VIGOR(11.32) —I make an inquiry of a more general nature at this stage. Firstly, I wish to applaud the Government's commitment to making extra staff resources available in the area of evaluation of medical devices and drugs. I would like to find out a little more about the current state of the program for monitoring the distribution and for flagging reports of injuries which are due to drugs and devices within Australia. I am particularly interested in when the proposed computer register system is expected to be fully operational, what is the range of records that will be held on the data base and what is the availability of this information to people within the community. I also ask: Will this be extended to looking at the area of accidents and injury prevention in the more general sense, particularly of child accidents, which are not currently fully monitored?
