To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:

That we recognise the Commonwealth Government's genuine concern for peace and justice.

We, your petitioners, humbly pray that your Honourable House will take notice:

1. That we wish to express our concern about the planned Pacific Area Defence Equipment Exhibition (P.A.D.E.X.) to be held in Sydney next year, 1986.

2. That we believe that Australia should do more to encourage activities that will promote peace.

3. That we believe that exhibitions such as PADEX are a danger to world peace, encourage and fuel arms race situations between neighbouring countries.

4. That we believe that as 1986 is the United Nations ``International Year of Peace'' and PADEX is to be held in that year it indicates the flagrant disrespect the arms trade holds both the U.N. and international peace promoting groups.

5. That we believe as do the United States Department of State and Amnesty International that many of the countries invited to PADEX are ``gross violators of human rights'' and that these countries will use arms purchased via PADEX to oppress and persecute minority groups within their own national borders.

6. That we believe that for Australia to maintain any semblence of moral integrity the Commonwealth Government must publicly disassociate itself from this odious exhibition and condemn the principle of such an exhibition being held anywhere in the world.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
