To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled.

The petition of the undersigned respectfully shows:

That we urge that the Australian Government express its concern to Indonesia over consistent reports of widespread human rights violations in East Timor, as detailed by Amnesty International, and that the Indonesian Government be urged to take steps to prevent killings, torture and arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, as has been recently reported.

We would further humbly request that the Australian Government use its voice at the United Nations to lobby strongly for the reinsertion of East Timor to the Human Rights Commission Agenda; that the above human rights concerns be raised at the General Assembly when the Decolonisation Committee makes its report; and that steps be taken to initiate UN conducted negotiations between Indonesia, Portugal and representatives of the East Timorese people, including Fretilin.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
