(Question No. 542)

Senator Sanders asked the Minister representing the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 16 September 1985:

(1) How many letters has the Minister for Primary Industry received on the Tasmanian woodchip issue each month since January 1985?

(2) What proportion of letters has favoured changes to the present operation of the woodchip industry, for each of these months?

Senator Walsh —The Minister for Primary Industry has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

1 and 2 I have received over 3,300 letters on woodchipping in Australia since January 1985. No record of those referring solely or specifically to Tasmania has been kept. Similarly, the number favouring change to the present operation of the woodchip industry is not available but I can advise that the letters cover a wide range of opinion from support for the industry to total opposition. It would not be appropriate to divert scarce staff resources from consideration of the export licence issues to extract the detailed information requested.
