Senator GARETH EVANS (Minister for Resources and Energy)(11.00) —I will ensure that Senator Michael Baume's contribution to the ongoing debate about the Army land in New South Wales is brought to the attention of the Minister for Defence (Mr Beazley) for such consideration as he thinks appropriate to give to it.

As to Senator Missen's contribution on a miscellany of topics relating to the treatment of refugees and people claiming refugee status, all I really wish to say at present is that the issues to which Senator Missen refers are ones of considerable delicacy and difficulty, involving the weighing and balancing of a large number of competing criteria in circumstances where some of the simple verities espoused by Senator Missen are perhaps not quite so evident at close quarters as they appear to be from where he sits. I understand his concern and I will refer it to myself tomorrow morning when I am Acting Foreign Minister in order to see what sort of sensible response can be made.

A Government response on the particular question of Papua New Guinea border crossings will, of course, await Mr Hayden's return from his current visit to Papua New Guinea where that particular topic is obviously assuming a very high place on his agenda.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Senate adjourned at 11.01 p.m.
