To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled.

Petition of the undersigned respectfully showeth concern for pending proposals to effectively alter the import duties applicable to parts for vehicles 30 years old and older, as from 30th June, 1985. Such proposals will clearly render pursuance of the laudable pastime of restoration of such vehicles, in many families and circumstances, financially unviable.

Persistence with the policy adopted by senior officers of your Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce, is anticipated to have a devastating impact upon employment in associated industries, and will significantly interfere with the preservation of a major component of our national heritage. At the same time, little if any revenue will be attracted in excess of that required to meet the administrative costs necessarily accruing to the proposed complex procedures.

Your petitioners therefore pray that you investigate their grievances as a matter of urgency, and we seek your support to undertake the necessary steps to ensure the continuance of the favourable import concessions for such parts, bearing in mind that complete vehicles of this age category are still to be deservedly the subject of concessional entry into Australia.

Your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
