Senator GARETH EVANS —Senator Reid asked me yesterday whether it was correct that the Special Minister of State had refused to talk to the Australian Capital Territory Branch of the Australian Federal Police Association. The Special Minister of State has provided me with the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

It is my practice to meet regularly with the National Executive of the AFPA to discuss issues they wish to raise with me. It would not be appropriate for me to discuss national issues with one branch of the association. As I set out in my answer to a question in the House of Representatives on 14 October 1985, I have agreed with the national executive that whenever matters concerning the A.C.T. are on the agenda for their meetings with me they will include representatives from the A.C.T. branch in their delegation.

I have arranged to meet with the national executive and the A.C.T. branch secretary next week to discuss issues of concern to the association. As a result of this meeting proposed industrial action in the A.C.T. has been deferred.
