Senator ROBERTSON(5.34) —The Leader of the Government (Senator Button) has come into the chamber, but perhaps in supporting the motion moved by the Leader of the Opposition, Senator Chaney, I can confirm that discussions were held and that his account of them reflects the outcome. The content of the Bill had nothing to do with the discussions that were held. It was the procedure that was being looked at and which occasioned discussion. We see some problems associated with the way in which we might handle the putting forward of plans for Bills. I think in this place the appropriate technique is to refer the matter to the Standing Orders Committee. I think we should do so on the motion of the Leader of the Opposition, and include in that reference the implication that we shall be looking for a speedy response from that Committee. I support the motion.
