Senator VALLENTINE —Mr Deputy President, I seek leave to make a statement.

Leave not granted.


Senator VALLENTINE —I would like to move for the suspension of Standing Orders, Mr Deputy President, because the refusal of leave directly contradicts what the Leader of the Opposition (Senator Chaney) has just requested from the Senate.


The DEPUTY PRESIDENT —You are entitled to move for the suspension of Standing Orders if you wish.


Senator VALLENTINE —Mr Deputy President, I wish to do that in order to make a personal explanation.


The DEPUTY PRESIDENT —Senator Vallentine, you have leave to make a personal explanation but you cannot extend the personal explanation to something else.


Senator VALLENTINE —I wish to make a personal statement.


The DEPUTY PRESIDENT —You do not have leave to make a statement. You may move for the suspension of Standing Orders to do it if you wish.


Senator VALLENTINE —I wish to move for the suspension of Standing Orders in order to make a personal statement.
