Senator DURACK —My question is directed to the Minister Assisting the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Senator Gareth Evans —Representing him here.

Senator DURACK —I never know quite how to refer to him in his many hats and so on.

Senator Gareth Evans —A damn sight more than you will ever wear.

Senator DURACK —I will enter into that competition with him privately on some occasion. I ask the Minister whether he is aware that the Acting Prime Minister told the House of Representatives yesterday:

The action of the United States was fully justified and we support the action.

Does the Minister agree with the Acting Prime Minister that the United States was fully justified in its actions to apprehend the hijackers of the Achille Lauro? Will he support the action of the United States?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I said yesterday that the communication to President Reagan was consistent with what the Acting Prime Minister had said before in the House of Representatives. Yesterday the Acting Prime Minister confirmed that what he said was, in fact, consistent with the text of that message. I have nothing further to add.
