Senator Sir JOHN CARRICK —I refer the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs to the Acting Prime Minister's statement of several days ago supporting the action of the United States of America in intercepting and forcing to land an Egyptian aircraft containing hijackers. I refer also to the message conveyed to the USA by the Acting Prime Minister as read out to the Senate by the Minister. Do we understand the Minister to say that this message, as read out, is to be understood to convey full support for the US action in intercepting the aircraft and subsequent events?

Senator GARETH EVANS —The message that I read out expresses clearly the Government's understanding for the efforts taken by the United States Administration to bring the perpetrators to justice. As such I repeat that it is quite consistent not with the response given some days ago but in fact with the response given yesterday in the House of Representatives by Mr Bowen to a question put to him by Mr Howard.
