Senator GARETH EVANS —During Question Time Senator Jones asked me a question about reports of journalists and others going to South Africa for the Hughes rebel cricket tour. I now have in front of me the brief relevant to that question. My attention has been drawn to those reports that a number of Australians and sports writers will be in South Africa to follow the Australian rebel cricket tour. The Government's policies on sporting contacts with South Africa are well known and have been publicly stated on too many occasions recently to need repetition now. The Australian code of business conduct, which is still in draft form and has not yet come into operation, is concerned with the operation of Australian companies having commercial or other interests in South Africa. So the accreditation of Australian journalists to cover events in South Africa would not appear to be relevant to the operations of that code of conduct.
