(Question No. 481)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 22 August 1985:

What methods exist for the prevention of our controlling the spread of the diseases `potato cyst nematode' or `potato black wart'.

Senator Walsh —The Minister for Primary Industry has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

Potato cyst nematode and black wart are controlled by prohibitions on potato cultivation, long term crop rotations and the use of resistant varieties. Potato cyst nematode is also controlled by application of chemicals to the soil to kill the nematodes. To prevent spread of the disease restrictions may be imposed on the movement of seed potatoes, vehicles and farm machinery from infested properties.
