(Question No. 477)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 22 August 1985:

Was the request to lift the embargo on the import of New Zealand potatoes into Australia discussed with Australian potato growers; if so, did the growers agree that no risk existed if such action was taken.

Senator Walsh —The Minister for Primary Industry has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The request was discussed with representatives of Australian potato growers at a meeting of the National Potato Panel on 3 November 1983. Growers did not agree that there were no quarantine risks. Growers have been advised that if they have evidence to support their view that the quarantine measures in place are inadequate they should present such evidence to the Minister responsible for quarantine. Growers have not presented evidence that justifies change.
