(Question No. 475)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 22 August 1985:

Have the Departments of Health and Primary Industry recommended that the Customs embargo on the import of potatoes into Australia be lifted.

Senator Walsh —The Minister for Primary Industry has provided the following answer to the honorable senator's question:

The Department of Health has no interest in imported potatoes following the transfer of responsibilities for plant and animal quarantine to the Department of Primary Industry in December 1984.

As the embargo was not in place for quarantine reasons and quarantine conditions have existed for more than a decade for the importation of potatoes from New Zealand, my Department did not raise any objections to lifting the Customs embargo in accordance with access provisions in the Australia/New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement.
